VA Education Benefits (Federal)

STEP 1: Complete VA Application for Benefits.

STEP 2: Once you receive the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA, please upload via 'Certification Request Portal'.

VA Rate of Pursuit and Training Time

Undergraduate

• Fall/Spring (Full-time)
  • 16 Week term (Fall/Spring Full Term): 12 credit hours
  • 7 Week term (Fall 1 & Spring 1/ Fall 2 & Spring 2): 6 credit hours
  • 2 Week term: 3 credit hours
  • 10 Week term: 8 credit hours
  • 7/7.5 Week term: 6 credit hours
  • 5 Week term: 4 credit hours

  Graduate

  • Fall/Spring (Full-time)
    • 16 Week term (Fall/Sping Full Term): 9 credit hours
    • 7 Week term (Fall 1 & Spring 1/Fall 2 & Spring 2): 4 credit hours
    • 10 Week term (Summer 1): 6 credit hours
    • 7/7.5 Week term: 4 credit hours
    • 5 Week term (Summer 1 & Summer 2 Full Term): 3 credit hours

    *The following do not pay the university directly for tuition and fees, only a stipend based on rate of pursuit and training time (i.e. Full-time, 3/4-time, 1/2-time, etc.).     Hazlewood Act Exemption (State)

    Documents Needed:

    • DD-214
      • Texas as 'Home of Record' OR 'Place of Entry'
      • Honorable OR General Under Honorable Conditions Discharge
      • 181 days of active-duty service (excluding training)
      • Must be classified as a Texas Resident by the university

      Dependents/Spouse, all above documents as well as:

      • Proof of Dependency (Ex: Birth Certificate, Marriage License, etc.)
      • Veteran's VA Letter of Disability (if applicable)

      *Can be used in conjunction with VA Education Benefits such as: CH.30 Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty (MGIB-AD), CH.33 Post 9/11 GI Bill (50-90% eligibility) and CH.35 Survivors' and Dependents' Education Assistance (DEA)*

      What is Covered?

      Provides qualified Veterans, Spouses, and Dependent Children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at public institutions of higher education in Texas. This does NOT include living expenses, books, or supply fees.

      Not covered:

      • 'Application Fee'
      • 'Orientation Fee'
      • 'Student Service Fee'
      • Islander Dining
      • Islander Housing

      Payment for these charges need to be made or arranged with the Business Office.
