Two sisters, who died in CNY car crash, were recent high school graduates, superintendent says

Hannibal, N.Y. — Two women who died in a Central New York car crash were sisters and recent high school graduates, a school official said today.

Hailey and Shelby Trumble were both killed in a crash in Cayuga County on Thursday, said Christopher A. Staats, superintendent of the Hannibal Central School District.

Two people died after a crash at 6:25 p.m. at the intersection of Ira Hill Road and Farnam Road in Ira, Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck said on Friday. A third person was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, he said.

The Trumble sisters were part of the Hannibal Central School District in Oswego County, Staats said.

Shelby graduated in June, and Hailey graduated in June of 2023, Staats said. Shelby just completed the Oswego County BOCES Cosmetology program, he said. Hailey completed the Digital Media program while in Hannibal, he said.

“Both young women always brought smiles to those around them and were deeply loved by all who knew them,” Staats said in a statement to Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

He mentioned a recent act of kindness by the animal-loving sisters.

“They rescued two abandoned kittens that required significant medical care and lovingly devoted themselves to meeting the kittens’ needs,” Staats said.

He described them both as “cherished members of our school community, known for their sweet and kind nature,” he said.
